Tip of the Week: Are the apps and extensions you use with students approved??
As you know, technology continues to grow and change at a fast rate of speed! Keeping up with all of the changes can be quite challenging! On top of the new apps and extensions that come out regularly, are regulations and laws to protect our students' information!
Across the United States, states are adopting laws that protect student and teacher information. New Hampshire has adopted RSA 189:66 - Student and Teacher Information Protection and Privacy.
What does this law mean for Exeter High School students and staff?
This law applies to all schools in New Hampshire. Our Technology Administrator, Richard Pratt, has been working very hard this year to align the requirements for our schools to meet RSA 189:66. Part of these requirements is ensuring that all apps and extensions that are used with students have agreed to sign the privacy agreement set by our state.
****This year we are compiling the list of "approved apps and extensions". Next year, we will most likely be restricting staff and students from using the apps and extensions that are not approved.
How do I know if an app that I use is approved?
Our school, along with many others, have joined the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC). Through the SDPC, we have started a database of approved and unapproved apps and extensions. To see if the apps and extensions you are using in your classroom are approved, please see the database below.
You will be seeing more information regarding RSA 189:66, coming to your school email in the near future with instructions on how to submit resources for approval, that may not be included in our database currently. You can also use the SDPC website to search the national wide database to get an idea if the app or extension has been approved elsewhere.
