Remote learning has presented some challenges for teaching. The situation has been quite fluid when it comes to technology, and what may be working well one week, may not be working well the next. Video Conferencing with Google Meet has had many updates and changes but through it all, the most important thing to do is be sure to have the control of the room when using Google Meet video conferencing.
What does it mean to have "Control of a Google Meet"?
There is only one person that can control a Google Meet- that is the owner of the Meet.
What does the owner have the ability to do?
- Allow participants OUTSIDE of our domain (sau16.org) to join - Unless the participate with an outside email address was directly invited, they cannot just join a Meet. They need to be allowed to join.
- Mute participants (the student can unmute themselves afterwards)
- REMOVE participants from a Meet (this is very important)
- Pin participants to the top of the viewer pane.
There has been some issues and confusion about how to become an owner of the Meet. The easiest way is to ensure you are "owner" is to create the Meet using Google Calendar. I know we have suggested this before, but again this situation is fluid.
Creating a Meet through Calendar(click for directions).
If you create a Meet from meet.google.com (not through Google Calendar) you MUST BE THE FIRST TO JOIN IN ORDER TO BE "OWNER". This is the same case for the "Join Meet" option now available in Google Classroom or from Gmail. When a teacher sets up a Meet with a nickname, if they do not join it before sharing, they risk a student joining first and becoming "owner". The confusion of this, is why I am suggesting the Calendar method again.
Newer Features to Google Meet:

*Tiled Layout (up to 16 participants on one page)- to "Change Layout" go to the 3 dots in the lower right side of the screen (see image left). Next, you can choose the "Tiled Layout".
* Present High Quality Video/Audio using present "A Chrome Tab" feature (allows you to share a video and the audio during a Meet).

* Low light mode (MOBILE DEVICES ONLY)- Only for mobile devices, you can now choose "low light mode". When you join or start call from a phone, go to the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the screen (to the right of the Closed Captions "CC" option). You will see different options and one of them is "Adjust for very low light".
- Noise Cancellation- Meet has recently rolled out this feature that works automatically using AI (artificial intelligence) to quiet background noises while using Meet.
