Tip of the Week: Moving files to Google Drive

Today I want to revisit a tidbit from December 2020, Chromebook Files Folder- not for storage! and also share information on how to move your files off of a Mac to Google Drive.

As a refresher, the Chromebook has a "files folder" .The files folder is a temporary "holding tank" for downloading or saving files. The files you want to save that are located in the files folder should be moved to Google drive. The files you no longer want to keep should be deleted.

The files folder is not backed up! It is not a safe place to keep files.

Files folder on a Chromebook - how to manage files:

How do I move files from a Mac to Google Drive?

  • Start by going to Google Drive on the Mac (drive.google.com)
  • Go to the settings in Google Drive and select if you want the files to convert uploads to a Google Doc format (or leave it unchecked if you want to maintain the Microsoft Word format).
  • Create a new folder in Google Drive and name it "Mac Files" or something that you will be able to recognize.
  • Open Finder (blue and white face icon)- find the folder where your files are.
  • Drag and drop them into the folder in Google Drive.
Here is short video tutorial:
