March 16, 2021___________________________________________________________Canvas has an option when you create an assignment to use various types of submissions. If you choose the "Online" submission option, you get the below choices and "text entry" is one of them. There are a few things I wanted to share with you if you choose to use the "text entry" option like you see below;
The text entry is risky if the student is unaware of the following;- Nothing in the text entry box that is typed is "auto -saving" in Canvas.
- If you start a text entry and the computer goes "to sleep", when you open it again, the text entry will be gone.
- If you start a text entry and lose wireless connection midway through writing it, the information will be gone.
- The content is only saved after they successfully "submit" and see something like this;
How can I make using a text entry less risky?- Choose a different option for the assignment. If you choose to use an "external tool" you could choose Google Drive Cloud Assignment, or Google Assignments which would ensure when students are creating work it is being auto saved.
- Make sure students are aware of this risk. They could type the text box entry in a Google doc, then copy and paste it into the text box if needed.
